IC19 Gods Rays at Budir
This is the Little Black Church at Budir on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, Iceland. It is black since the wood is coated with pitch, just like a boat hull might be for weather proofing. There are several of the black churches in Iceland. We drove a couple hours north of Reykjavík to get here, through some of the most beautiful sunrise pinks we had ever seen. We thought maybe all mornings were like that in Iceland. In the winter, the sun remains very low on the horizon, popping in and out of the ocean marine layer creating dramatic lighting for photographers.
