This very colorful oily sheen on top of the water is a naturally occuring iron-oxidizing bacteria. Iron is a very common element found in soil and water. Bacteria feed on the iron in the water react with the oxygen in the air creating this colorful film on the water. This harmless chemical reaction can only be seen in very low flowing streams.
