Bosque del Apache wildlife refuge was established about 80 years ago as resting and feeding grounds for migrating birds. Sandhill cranes move between several ponds feeding throughout the day. However, before they can fly to another pond, they must free their frozen legs from the pond where they spent a cold winter night.
