This is the Little Black Church at Búðir on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, Iceland. It is black since the wood is coated with pitch, just like a boat hull might be for weather proofing. There are several of the black churches in Iceland. We drove a couple hours north of Reykjavík to get here, through some of the most beautiful sunrise pinks we had ever seen. We thought maybe all mornings were like that in Iceland. This is not an early morning sunrise as it would be if this scene were in the USA. In the winter, the sun does not get too much higher than shown in this photo. As a result the sunrises and sunsets can last over an hour each. Beautiful country for photographers.
